Last, but not least, Zinful Panini Grill & Wine Bar.  I was too overwhelmed to focus so just centered on all the cool lamps they have.  Each table has a different one!

What a wonderful day!  We had a great group of sketchers today.  Jim B, Greg A, Ed D, Patty K, Cindy R and myself, Patty G.

42nd World Wide Sketch Crawl, Tri Cities, Washington

 

Today was my first world wide sketch crawl! We started out at Yoke's on Keene, at 9:00am. I thought sketching bananas would help nourish my art appetite.

 

Time flew by so we left Yoke's, (Patti G. and Jim B) at 10:30am and met up with some of our sketchers  already at The Local coffee shop on Gage. From my view point from across the room, I opted to sketch a Melting Milton Imagining piece of art. Cameron Milton uses melted crayola crayons.  I chose Art Bars for this fun and colorful piece, especially since our relentless inversion weather continues.

 

Close up, I thought that I would share my latte heart and yummy croissant.  I had a wonderful morning sketching.

"42nd World Wide Sketchcrawl - Link to All the Sketches"

We joined the rest of the world's sketchers today when we started at 9am in Yoke's new grocery on Keene.  Then we moved on to the Local coffee shop on Keene, lunch at Ice Harbor Brewery in Kennewick, then on to Zinfuls in downtown Kennewick for wine, more snacks, more sketching and finally a showing at about 3pm. 

It is fair to say, everyone really enjoyed the outing and look forward to the next.

Urban Sketching

This is a lousy composition - I just sat down with my Salted Caramel Mocha (SO expensive) and drew what was in front of me.  That'll teach me!!

So the trees in this mini library are pretty darn cool and I wanted to draw them ALL so I started pretty small - too small - and used my new Lamy pen with blue ink.  MAN, does it RUN!  

I also used a white correcting pen on 2 of the chairs and the paint wouldn't stick.  

Ah, the things you learn on Wednesday mornings!

West Pasco Starbucks & Library - 1/22/14

Passing the time at the Rd 68 Starbucks with Jim, Nancy & Cindy, as we wait for the newest Mid-Columbia Library branch in West Pasco to open.  Pretty tight quarters but I managed to find these cute little baskets with their funny little feet.  I can imagine them coming to life at night and running around the store, playing tag and then scurrying back together in the morning as the shop workers open the doors!

At the library, my imagination continues to unravel as I see this big tree (1 of 3) peering over the shoulder of this person, straining to see what they are writing.  Red & white capped mushrooms abound in this magical space as books fly through the air like birds.  Alas, I failed to capture those!  Next time!

Pasco Library

"Starbucks then Library"

 

The original intent was to go to the new west Pasco library, but since it doesn't open until 11am, we stopped in at the Starbucks on Road 68 to do some warm-up sketching.  This is my quick and dirty little sketch (above) of these two ladies, Cindy and Nancy below.  In my sketch Cindy looks angry; I can assure you she wasn't. I should have given a little upturn on the sides her mouth, then she would look as happy and content as she really was.  

 

 

Sketching people is one of my favorite pastimes.  Here I grabbed a photoshop bucket full of black paint, tossed it on the sketch and was surprised at how it came out.  I like it.

A Tree Grows in Kennewick

For some reason my attention was on the outside of the building, and I really just wanted to draw the tree.  I slowly filled in some of the overwhelming details.  I like Nancy's approach...maybe next time.  I totally was impressed with Patty G. and Jim B. getting the whole picture.  They are all so quick and I am painfully slow.  I love the pictures everyone did of The Blank Canvas.  Thanks all!

At The Blank Canvas - Jan. 15, 2014

Sometimes it's the small things that grab your attention.   Unfortunately I discovered that one of my pens was not waterproof but I kind of like it!

The Blank Canvas is a huge, basically empty building (an old JC Penney store) that is mainly used for special events.  I did not do the building or my sketcher buddies justice today but this is my attempt.

As we were leaving the venue, I took a photo of the building exterior.  Decided to try my hand at it a couple days later.  The perspective is all off and I just noticed that the signage is way out of wack.  Hmmmmm. :(

"The Blank Canvas"

 

 The Blank Canvas, downtown Kennewick Washington hosted Urban Sketcher's Tri-Cities on a sunny January 15th. The large room is available for artistic activities.  This was my warm up sketch.

Again, inside at The Blank Canvas, I made a 50 degree turn and attempted to sketch Dave, but my sketch looks a bit like Jim, guys, they all look about the same!  lol

Thank you Cindy for opening the doors for our group!  You rock woman!

January 15, 2014

Today we met at the Blank Canvas in downtown Kennewick.  It was a big, open room with some really great paintings by Melanie Thompson (I hope I got that right!).  I narrowed it down:

This is the sink faucet by the counter with the coffee machine.  

I was a bit overwhelmed by work issues this morning 

so I needed something simpler than a huge, open room!

I finished early and drew a couple quick studies of Patti and Maryann.

"The Blank Canvas and Espresso Machine"

The USkTC group met this morning in member Cindy Rutherford's "Blank Canvas" gallery in downtown Kennewick.  We had another good turn-out with seven sketchers in attendance.  While there, this older model expresso machine caught my eye and I felt it only fair I give it a place to hang out in my tan toned Strathmore sketchbook.  Once I got it home, I used photoshop to create even greater values and the darkened background.

Interior Perspectives Revisited

I had about 45 minutes to kill between appointments today, so I stopped in where we were drawing last Wednesday morning and tried another sketch of this lobby.  This time from a different point of view and for the first time, with some Windsor-Newton blue ink in my pen.  As I suspected the ink is water soluble, but I think that might make it more interesting to play with, for a while anyway.

Interior Perspective Study

The Wednesday morning sketch group met this morning in the lobby of this building that sits adjacent to the "509 Artspace" building.  It was cold this morning, but there were four brave souls who ventured forth to sketch and enjoy this typical January morning. 

 

Nancy is correct, this was a challenging draw.  I sat on my little three-pronged stool for a quite a while trying to figure out where the horizon line was located - a very small section on the top of one of the stairs, very narrow.  Then I forgot to pay close attention to where the vanishing point would sit on that line, far off to the right of the page.  I generalized.  Mistake.

 

So, when I got it home and thought about it for a few hours, I scanned it, ran it through photoshop and it looks a lot better than raw on the sketchbook page.  I don't know if this is cheating or not, but I'm choosing it isn't...hey, it's art, right?   Anyway, here it is:

Wednesday Sketching!

Just a little challenge!  We met at Clearwater West in a large, 2 story lobby with a wall of 

glass windows, ceiling tiles, exposed metal beams, a skylight AND stairs.  

Horror.

I tried my new toned tablet and was surprised at my timidity with the white gel pen but then the whole thing was a bit terrifying.  I should have done more to designate the glass in the windows...
